This page is devoted to Jacky Murray, who passed away on Saturday, 28 January after being taken ill at a hockey match.
Jacky was born and lived in Accrington until she went to Hull University where she played hockey for the University team. On leaving University she became a teacher and joined Hull & East Riding H.C. In the 1990s she moved to Hull Circle where she remained an active playing member. She also played for British Gas in the mixed league in Humberside.
Hockey was an integral part of Jacky's life and she was not only a committee member in her club but was the Yorkshire and NE Masters Chair as well as being on the Umpires committee.
Jacky played for England Over 60s and was in the Silver medal team at the Rotterdam World Cup in 2014 and was part of the Gold medal team that won the Home Nations in 2014.
During lockdown Jacky took up golf and within 18 months had won 4 trophies and reduced her handicap, showing what a sports person she was. Jacky also took up lawn bowls that year and soon gained a reputation as a strong lead in the triples team for Kingston Bowling Club.
She became the main architect of the LX Women's hockey club and it is thanks to her hard work and endeavour that LX now have two Over 60s teams, a 65s and a 70s team that participate in the Spirit of Masters section of the World Cup and play in the European Trophy.
Jacky was a terrier on the pitch, hardworking, never gave up, but always had a smile on her face and never a cross word. She worked just as hard off the pitch to promote Women's Masters hockey and for that she will never be forgotten. Hockey celebrates a wonderful life led by a beautiful person.
Thoughts and prayers are with Jacky's husband Jim, their two boys Rob and Andrew, daughter-in-law Laura and granddaughter Isabel.
Jacky will be very sadly missed, but never far from our thoughts.
