While Andrew donated blood many times and must've saved numerous lives, his own was cut short suddenly and unexpectedly. He was a dedicated lecturer & researcher, knowledgeable, loyal, always ready to help, with a quirky sense of humour.

Andrew grew up in New Zealand and the love of the outdoors and a desire to have a barbecue, as well as his love of animals, books and music started in his happy childhood. Andrew was a confident and an academically-gifted person. He was generous with his time and ready to pass his knowledge and experience, whether in his professional or personal life, to others. He had high standards and demanded them of other people while always supporting them along the way. Andrew had a scientific and inquisitive mind, open to new ideas and was rigorous in his research and keen to leave a lasting legacy in the field of evolutionary microbiology. Andrew was proud whenever his own word 'wrinkleality' had been mentioned in an article and his hope was to have it recognised by OED. He published extensively in scientific papers, collaborating with colleagues from abroad as well as finding time to mentor his students. His contributions to Health and Safety meetings at Abertay University were invaluable. He also served at different roles, most recently as an Honorary Chair, on the Committee of the Royal Society of Biology, Scotland, and had many ideas to help the Society grow, reach new audiences and expand the membership. He enjoyed interacting with colleagues at conferences, visiting different cities and sampling some local food and beer (though he hardly drank at home). At home he relaxed by listening to Classic FM or by watching a film (of not very high standards). He liked to travel around Scotland, his home for the past 18 years, too, rarely missing an opportunity to refuel at a cafe with coffee and a cake, visiting local gift and antique shops and second-hand bookshops. Andrew was an avid Reader and a collector of books, with his love for chocolate and biscuits on par. He was famed amongst friends for being partial to fish & chips with lots of lemon (making sure he had one with him whenever a visit was planned). He thrived on discussions and friendly arguments with friends and family. His interests span pottery (as his sturdy pots given to friends and colleagues over the years still testify), art, aeroplanes, trains and model-making. He also liked to encourage wildlife to the garden by spreading seeds (especially poppies), making a pond and feeding birds. He was keen to make things, some more useful than others but many original, and never happy with the number of tools he had. He collected things washed on the beach where he walked quite regularly. His playfulness, though not at first apparent, made him a good companion for children. His songs (that may not have passed parental approval as lyrics were not dinner-table-suitable) are still remembered by his two goddaughters and their siblings, years after he had made them up. Andrew was a keen storyteller and eager to expand his joke repertoire. His many talents, some quite hidden, and his good heart and kindness will be remembered and missed by many family, friends, colleagues and students.
