Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thelma Fernandes at Barnet General Hospital, North London on 5th February 2024. She passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by her family after a short illness. Prior to her untimely demise, she enjoyed living life to the fullest with her family and friends.
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Thelma was the daughter of the late John and Melita Fernandes. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Cresenti Fernandes. She is survived by her three children Caroline (Richard), Douglas (Idoia), Christopher and three grandchildren: Nerea, Monica and Alex. Sister to Walter (Evelyn) and Valerie (Joe). Her eldest son, Valentino, pre-deceased her at a young age.
She fell in love and married Cresenti at a joyous ceremony in Nairobi in 1963. They emigrated to the UK in September 1983 and set up home in Edgware where they welcomed many friends and family to experience their warm and generous hospitality on many occasions. - there was always a reason for a party. Nevermore so when it came to special occasions.
Thelma was creative, participating in several flower arranging competitions both in Kenya and the UK. She won several awards for flower arranging with the Kenyan Floral Society. Also, she was part of the St Austin’s church flower arranging team in Nairobi creating beautiful, large arrangements for the special services. She was interested in the performing arts and often took us to the ballet and theatre.
Thelma loved life and all it had to offer with a keen interest in travel and adventure - visiting many different countries and making friends with all who she met.
She loved nature and kept 17 budgerigars and raised 17 dogs during her lifetime. She kept beautiful gardens both in Nairobi and in Edgware, both which were full of colour and variety.
She will be greatly mourned and missed by all who knew her.
